Some people are still shopping at grocery stores using safe distancing, while others have turned to grocery delivery services and weekly CSA (community-supported agriculture) boxes to help keep their home stocked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re all feeling a lot more stress and uncertainty as we try to cope with this \u201cnew normal.\u201d One of the side effects of all this stress \u2013 and sometimes boredom \u2013 has been an increase in unhealthy eating habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales of chips, snacks, and other processed foods are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/07\/business\/coronavirus-processed-foods.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making a strong comeback<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as shoppers buy processed foods that have a long shelf life, are quick and easy to make, and even provide some emotional comfort to help ease those long, housebound days. At the same time, sales of fresh produce are down, reversing a long trend towards healthier eating. Some grocers have seen as much as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/food\/story\/2020-03-31\/produce-vendors-wholesale-market-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90% drop in sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of fruits and vegetables, as restaurants close and consumers worry about the safety of produce out on display.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know that to stay healthy, we should eat healthy. Stress worsens our mood and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/eating-during-covid-19-improve-your-mood-and-lower-stress-2020040719409\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suppresses our immune system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but nutrients in fruits and veggies have been shown to support the immune system and spur the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, helping you feel less anxious and stay healthier too.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question is, how can we safely eat the healthy fruits and vegetables we need during the coronavirus pandemic?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Is produce still safe to eat?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/newsletter\/food-safety-and-Coronavirus.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of transmission of COVID-19 associated with food. Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus doesn\u2019t survive well on surfaces<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is likely a very low risk of spread of COVID-19 from food products or packaging. Nevertheless, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/communication\/steps-healthy-fruits-veggies.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> washing all fruits and vegetables, organic or conventional, to help remove dirt, microbes, and some pesticides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Department of Agriculture warns consumers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/fsis\/topics\/food-safety-education\/get-answers\/food-safety-fact-sheets\/safe-food-handling\/washing-food-does-it-promote-food-safety\/washing-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to use soap or detergent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to wash produce. They aren\u2019t approved for use on foods and could leave a residue that could make you sick. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/instituteforfoodsafety.cornell.edu\/coronavirus-covid-19\/food-safety-recommendation-consumer\/#washing-fresh-produce\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleach solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should never be used on foods for the same reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A smarter way to wash fruits and veggies<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/keep-food-safe.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rinsing produce under running water if you\u2019re looking for a more thorough clean, you can use a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecos.com\/household-cleaners\/organic-fruit-veggie-wash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">produce cleaner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is designed specifically for food. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecos.com\/household-cleaners\/fruit-veggie-wash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ECOS\u00ae Fruit + Veggie Produce Cleaner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses a safer, plant-derived surfactant to remove unwanted residues and contaminants like dirt, and wax from produce. Swish the water around once or twice before straining and rinsing your produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stay healthy, stay safe!\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this virus is especially dangerous for those with preexisting health conditions, and because COVID-19 may be with us for months or years to come, it\u2019s vital to keep eating a healthy, produce-rich diet and to cut back on those nutrient-depleted packaged and processed foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two of the most important things we can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecos.com\/live-cleaner\/askthegreenscientist-the-science-of-handwashing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wash our hands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecos.com\/safer-cleaning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean and disinfect our homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
